The "P" (proportional) gain, The Ziegler-Nichols Method is one of the best known tuning methods, that is based an open loop step-response function of time (Ziegler (1942)). The produced response function is approached by a first order transfer function with dead time. Applying the extracted parameters (K, τ and Ds) heuristic tables are utilized fortuning. Ziegler-Nichols Method: First, note whether the required proportional control gain is positive or negative. To do so, step the input u up (increased) a little, under manual control, to see if the resulting steady state value of the process output has also moved up (increased). The Ziegler-Nichols rule is a heuristic PID tuning rule that attempts to produce good values for the three PID gain parameters: Kp - the controller path gain Ti - the controller's integrator time constant Td - the controller's derivative time constant The classical Ziegler-Nichols methods, introduced in 1942, are some of the most known and applied tuning methods for PID controllers. For many years, Ziegler-Nichols tuning techniques were strictly manual operations executed whenever a new control loop was commissioned. Similar to the Ziegler–Nichols method, a set of tuning parameters were developed to yield a closed-loop response with a decay ratio of 1/4. Arguably the biggest problem with these parameters is that a small change in the process parameters could potentially cause a closed-loop system to become unstable.
